United Airlines – USA/Malaga – Is there more to come?

Hot foot on the arrival of last week’s United Airlines inaugural flight into Malaga airport from New York (Newark NJ), comes the news that the airline operator doesn’t want their new route to be a summer only service.

The green shoots of great news followed reports that the inaugural flight, that arrived on Thursday 1st June and its return flight on Friday 2nd, both contained a full compliment of passengers. See our earlier piece here The Bird Has Landed

With a total of 17,000 seats in either direction, United currently has plans to continue the service, with a total of 52 scheduled flights (three times weekly) until 28th September. However, it has already been made clear that United will consider more routes between Málaga and the US if the demand can be sustained.

United Airline Head of Sales in Spain, Antonio de Toro, has said that the company intends to consolidate the route with the aim of extending it beyond summer. However, as you’d expect, the results will need to be studied into the Autumn before any announcements are made.

Since the news broke last week we have had several discussions with those who have family and friends through the continental US with Miami and Chicago being particularly popular suggested destinations.

This is all having a measurable impact on visitor numbers. The latest data from the Turismo Costa del Sol reports that this is a rising market, with growth in traveller numbers being up 26.1% on the same period in 2019. Booked stays in Andalucia from the US, between January and March this year, rose by 32.3%.

The official statistics confirm that to date in 2023, 171,623 US travellers have stayed in Andalusian hotels, up 11.4% for the same season in 2019.

We also have empirical evidence from estate agents on the ground in our region that US buyers have a growing interest in buying a property on the Costa del Sol. This, in part, has been fueled by those visitors from the US who have an involvement in the burgeoning tech sector with Malaga playing an increasingly lead role on the world stage.
