Costa del Soul

Gecko Towers

Popular wisdom has it that interest in formal organized religion is waning. Not necessarily are we becoming more secular nor is our interest in the Devine less relevant, for me its more about the simple notion of “self”. This has caused us to be less likely to reach out for the spiritual guidance from an established faith and more prone to explore sources of energy and healing from less conventional or constrained routes.

As an aside, were you aware that Barcelona’s majestic “Sagrada Familia” that was started in 1882 and is currently on track to be completed in 2026, has been largely funded by individual and anonymous donations. Regrettably, it is probably the last great European Christian temple as I cannot imagine that today there would be sufficient public support to fund and erect such a building.

The concept of being kinder to “yourself”, in tandem with a post Pandemic sense of Carpe Diem (Seize the Day) has led to an inquisitiveness to understand more about the Spirit or the Soul, if you prefer. This is about the very essence of “self” – the core, the root of your being.

The life-style promotional films for the Marbella region, the available mega-boats, stunning properties and the associated entertainment infrastructure, that used to boast about “Sun, Sea and Sangria” has been substantially replaced by a more healthy and holistic focus on the nourishment the Mind, Body and Soul.

Tranquility – Towards Marbella from the Eastside Beach

I have spied a trend emerging from the clients we work with here in Marbella and have majored on it in a previous posts – see here a couple – Younger Property Buyers and Are younger property buyers really disinterested by cheap booze and all day breakfasts?

The profiles of visitors and residents have driven an unprecedented demand for an evolving variety of retreats, treatments, exercise regimes, gyms and spas.

Googling “Holistic Marbella” reveals many established enterprises devoted to the offering of alternative medicine, including: homeopathy, Reiki, massage, Kinesiology, natural therapies, lymphatic drainage, reflexology, naturopathy and wellness. Not to mention “Jiu-Jitsu”, “Meditation” or “Pilates”. Or, perhaps the most popular, “Yoga” from beach Yoga and studio-based Yoga via the complementary disciplines of “Hatha Yoga”, “Ashtanga Yoga”, “Strala Yoga”, “Yin Yoga and “StandUpPadel Yoga”.

The list is virtually endless but the cumulative effect of these myriad of options is to provide us all with the opportunity on a year round basis to feast on the food for the Soul.

Mrs W and I recently were inducted into the undoubted health benefits of “Pilates” which now boasts a huge devotee base in the Marbella region. From the Puente Romano Hotel Pilates to individual Pilates studios there are now at least seventeen such outlets in the Marbella, Nueva Andalusia and San Pedro de Alcantara region.

Undeniably, the Millennials, GenX and GenZ form the core of Marbella property purchasers. Their demand for a healthier lifestyle and all of the complimentary pursuits associated with it, will continue to drive and develop the Marbella economy into the future.

Calming Greens

My firm belief is that this is all part of the collective exhaling of breath that we are experiencing after the Pandemic. Many have experienced loss, both loved ones and time from enforced restriction. We owe it to ourselves to take greater care of our health and to receive regular health checks. Its quite clear that there is a trend towards longevity but conditioning your body to be able to cope with more years brings a new focus on regular exercise.

The Irish actor Liam Neeson was asked what he does to stay fit, he replied “motion is the lotion” and the secret to his health routine. We are all encouraged to have our phones in our pockets to record that we are doing circa 10,000 paces a day. It’s the one goal that it really is worth exceeding for as long as you are physically able to.
