Costa del Sol – Summer Sun!

Gecko Towers

Conscious, as we all are, about the perils of Global Warming, the Costa del Sol – literally “The Sun Coast” – has lived up to its eponymous name! Some thought this Summer was pretty hot and now the scientists have confirmed what we at first suspected.

It was a belter…. properly Scorchio!!!

The Aemet weather agency, founded in Madrid by a Royal Decree in August 1887, has for many years been tasked with weather forecasting, monitoring and reporting. The Agency has recently announced that a record was broken this Summer.

The average maximum daytime temperature, taken at the Costa del Sol Airport in Malaga, during the months of June, July and August 2022, achieved a staggering 31.8C. The highest such reading since record keeping began in 1943.

Beach Life

The record is not for the hottest day – that was achieved in 1978 when 44.2C was recorded – but the phenomenal weather lasted for the longest continuous period creating a record breaker.

We make much of the Costa del Sol climate, with over 340 days of annual sunshine, and while the Sun is not the only driving factor for those who come to enjoy holidays and relocation to the Costa del Sol. It does help! So whether you stay in Malaga City, of turn left or right at the Airport you are largely assured of some year round sunshine.

Cooling Greens

We say it most years but edging into September and further into October there is a noticeable break, we talk about a light switch being thrown, at the end of August. During the Autumn months temperatures in the mid to high 20C are usual but the fall in daytime highs brings a predictable rhythm with the return of the golfers and those who have escaped the heat of the Summer to visit friends or family in cooler climates.

I have been in discussions recently with some in the property developer community, as the high temperatures do give concern as to the best ways to ensure that properties are protected from the heat whilst their occupants are kept comfortable.

New and sustainable ways of cooling properties are being researched and the evidence of the gradual and undeniable increases in, especially, summertime heat, gives those in the tech community clear incentives to deliver compelling alternatives to gas-based air conditioning with its well-documented and collateral impact on the environment. We are researching some of the new smart solutions and will share these with you in a future blog.
