MPL: A Week of Rain!

Gecko Towers

Yesterday we were placed on an Orange Alert warning by the Spanish State Meteorological Agency regarding the prospect of heavy rain on the Costa del Sol from 18.00 last evening.

No sh** Sherlock! It threw it down, combined with thunder and lightning over the beach in San Pedro de Alcantara, the gardens got a good dowsing. Our pool was, for the third time in as many weeks, close to overflowing.

I am frequent subscriber to the Apple App weather service which has a quite impressive strike rate for predicting the likelihood of what weather systems we can expect. The overnight rain is predicted to continue, with a 95% probability – very rarely seen on the Costa del Sol – for most of today. Using the App’s daily weather function, it can be seen that the rain we are experiencing is in waves, of more or less intensity, ranging from a iridescent blue, through magenta and to ochre foretelling the veracity of the storms.

Looking down the track it seems this weather system is fixed for at least the next four days.

The impact of these rain storms is yet to fully seen on the water levels in Embalse de La Concepcion but this morning at 10.00 the level was up .05%. This represents .03hm3 – that’s 30m litres! Not only are the levels significantly up on the same time last year – 24.07hm3 as opposed to the same week in 2023 -17.06hm3 – but the run off will continue after the rain has stopped on, probably, Friday this week.

Regular residents on the Costa del Sol will recall the annual metamorphosis that we go through as we recondition our bodies for colder weather. For the first time since March, I am wearing jeans and a jumper. Seven months since we wore heavier clothing, it feels strange. Who remembers that sensation of returning to school after the summer holidays when long trousers and socks felt particularly alien?

For many from Northern Europe the less welcoming weather is inconvenient. Half-term school holidays are times to recharge the families collective batteries and, in Spain, the usually reliable warmer weather is just perfect. I have written before of those things that are available in Marbella when it rains – all I can say, in a hushed tone …but really sorry!

What to do in Marbella when it rains? ……Enjoy but take an umbrella!
