Gecko Towers:
This is the second in a short series aimed at demystifying that household essential – Electricity.
There is one fundamental difference between the UK and Spain in the way that suppliers charge for the energy used.
In the UK, there is no fixed monthly cost for the peak use of energy. The supply companies are responsible for the calculation of the peak energy required in any part of the supply circuit (from power station to individual user), and the monthly cost to the user is the total of the kWh used multiplied by the agreed cost in the consumer’s contract, plus some small fixed charges.
In Spain, there is a fixed monthly cost. Every individual user must calculate what will be their peak power used, and this is included as a separate item in the monthly bill. This difference between the two countries causes many concerns for UK residents with properties used for holidays only. The complaint is that whilst at home the costs are minimal when the property is empty, in Spain, there is a high monthly charge.
The contracted peak power, or Maximum Demand, is key. If the contracted peak power is higher than the peak measured on the meter then the user pays more each month than is needed; however, if it is lower than needed, there is a device in the control board that cuts off the supply and must be reset manually. The effect if there is no one to reset the device can lead to freezer defrosting, etc.
