The British are known for their fascination with the weather. Being an island – inevitably surrounded by seas with conflicting winds and thermal conditions -means that along with Radio 4’s “Shipping Forecast” the dynamics of British weather are never just dull nor particularly extreme. Yet they are the perennial conversation starter
In Spain, the activities of the state-run Meteorological Agency, AEMET – responsible for issuing coloured weather warnings – become the barometer of public interest and reaction to impending weather condition. The remnants of the Atlantic “Storm Claudia” is such a case.
Conversations start a number of days before the arrival of rain with speculation as to whether the prevailing front will whip up the sands of the Sahara and dump “Calima” on the Costa del Sol. On the face of it no great drama, until you consider the damage to the light-coloured painted properties – white, off-white or light beige – of the Costa del Sol leaving them tear stained a shade of orangey pink!
The Rain in Spain is never taken for granted and we keenly watch the levels of our local reservoirs ensuing that we have enough deposited over the cooler months to cope with the vagaries of the summer heat.
For instance, slightly over two weeks ago we had two bouts of rain that modestly raised the level of our local “Embalse de la Concepcion” reservoir from 60.5% on 29.10 to 61% on 30.10. Today’s (13.11) level of 58.9% needs a little fillip!

Here is an excellent piece by Raquel Merino in the Sur in English that warns of an impending muddy shower! https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/muddy-rain-calima-haze-costa-del-sol-20251112113511-nt.html
