Costa del Sol – Bad Weather and Short Memories!

Gecko Towers

Not seven days ago we were all ranting, along with the conventional and online media about the appalling weather being visited on the Costa del Sol by various very unpleasant storms coming primarily from the Atlantic. The wreaked havoc on lives and homes in the area causing huge amounts of damage from the wind and rain that lashed the Costa del Sol.

The reaction of the municipal and state-wide authorities was unprecedented and cautious. So often criticize for late or inaction this time warning notices were delivered twice to our mobiles, schools were closed and every attempt was made to inform those likely to be affected of the impending deluge.

Predictably, trees were felled, rivers swollen and banks breached as the flood water rose. Tragedies unfolded with a regrettably sad fatality being reported. There was a story of a horse being swept out to sea in the Sotogrande region. A Swedish expat, perhaps foolishly, braving a fast flowing river to rescue his dogs. The hugely resilient and hardy people of the region hunkered down, groaned a little but just got on with life.

The roads became ice rinks and the spray from lorries and the curtains of water from traffic in the opposite direction lane made driving perilous.

That was recent history but the comfortable calm has gradually returned to solidify the mud, dry up the floods and return our overly irrigated pools and gardens to something approaching normality.

With this thaw comes an eye to the future when the sun will beam on us returning us to relentlessly hot and sunny days of spring and summer when the wet of January and February will very quickly be forgotten. The warmth on our skins so profound it reaches our bones. The storm’s legacy will be a carpet of magnificent and brightly colored wild flowers in the meadows surrounding the coast. Our citrus trees, our cherries and almonds will blossom and their beauty will anesthetize if not totally delete the memories of a wet Winter.

Spring is nearly here and the wet days of Winter will gradually fade from our recent view and be consigned to a footnote in the “Do you remember the Winter of 2025/26?”when, like pain, our recollection will be increasingly faulty as we inevitably believe it was wetter, stormy and darker than it actually was, if that’s at all possible.

The most recent weather app reading seems to predict a splendid new week.
