The Great Getaway

Gecko Towers

Talk of resetting, release and relief has appeared all over the media. There is no question that in both the UK and Spain several of the markers that prompted the various lockdowns have been exceeded. The number of infections have fallen and, although currently, there is some disparity in the percentage of the relevant population having being inoculated, the impact on the virus has been remarkable.

There is a new optimism and the barometers of this are seen in a huge increase in flight bookings after the end of May and, interestingly, a surge in bookings to attend summer-time outdoor music festivals.

There has been talk for some months about the “Champagne Cork” effect of many thousands of Northern Europeans long denied the chance of some Spanish sun bursting to get their beach pitch. It seems that with continued good news and some clear definition as to the required proof of inoculation, that a summer break in Spain may well beckon.

For others this may go further.

There is no doubt that we, along with many based in the Costa del Sol market, have detected an appreciable increase in online traffic to our various sites, blogs and Facebook groups that collectively debate the ease, or not, with which Brits will be able to settle in Spain post the Brexit dust settling. The threads are often similar, some are exasperated by the legacy of being lockdown for months and many debate the opportunities to settle in Spain.

The truth is that those who conclusively pronounce the definitive position of the Spanish administration are often short of the mark. There is somewhat a state of flux where both the UK and Spain fumble to determine their new relationship going forward.

Make no mistake the Spanish authorities have no incentive to prevent you from choosing Spain to be your new home. The valuable economic incentive of you spending time and money in Spain aside, the centre left coalition that currently holds political sway in Spain is open to permitting residency albeit it on more restrictive terms post the UK leaving the EU. Applications progress, somewhat slowly, for relevant visas but the pandemic has, naturally, hindered many such processes.

We are extremely confident that, in time, all will be resolved and those seeking to settle in Spain will benefit from certainty as to the process and the practice.
