In January this year, the Spanish Government announced exciting plans for those who are interested in qualifying for a new Visa aimed at “Digital Nomads” – please see our earlier pieces here – New Spanish visa proposals aimed at attracting Digital Economy talent.
It was originally thought that these new Visas would be available from September this year but the start date has slipped a little. However, a useful recent announcement has broadened the appeal of these Visa.
It has been confirmed that citizens of “third party countries” such as the United States of America, in addition to those living outside the European Economic Area (EEA), will be offered the prospect of qualifying for this new Visa.
Various online reports quoting Spanish Government sources, now suggest that the new Teleworking Visa and Residence Permit (also known as “the Digital Nomad Visa”) will start being issued in December 2022, but this has not be categorically confirmed.
If successful, the applicants will be allowed to live in Spain and work remotely for companies who are located outside Spain who can demonstrate that they bill no more than 20% of their turnover to Spanish businesses.
The applicant will need to demonstrate that they have been working remotely for at least a year on either a contractual or on a freelance basis with a company based outside Spain and that their earnings are sufficient to be self supporting.
It is thought that these Visas will initially be granted for one year with the option to be renewed for up to five years.
The long term aim of this strategy appears to be to encourage more to migrate to the Spanish system becoming ultimately becoming tax residents (usually after 183 days of living in the country) and contributing to the Social Security system.
