UK Government – New Spanish Property Advice

Gecko Towers

With a clear understanding that there is a groundswell of pent-up interest in foreign travel, the UK Government today released a new and highly comprehensive Advice Update – entitled “Spain: buying and renting property” – specifically for those Brits thinking that they may like to rent or even buy a property in Spain.

I would not seek to condense such a detailed and considered advice document in the confines of this blog post, but I am very proud to say that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the British Government comprehensively validates a regular cry that my loyal readers will have heard often repeated in this blog. Under the second section “Legal Advice” the FCDO Advice reads – and I acknowledge Crown Copyright – as follows:

“We strongly recommended that you choose an independent lawyer who specialises in Spanish land law (urbanismo). Independent means that they work on your behalf only and are not also looking after the interests of the agent or developer.

The Spanish property conveyancing system is different to the UK system so you should ensure that those involved in the transaction are qualified and experienced in Spain.

Use extreme caution if an estate agent, promoter or lawyer urges you to cut corners to save money or time.”

Enough said.
