Today we have the next in a series of articles from a guest contributor, John Pearce, an adviser on energy management.
With the charge for electricity being divided into two separate elements of capacity (potencia) and the actual amount of energy used, the management of electricity cost is dependent upon how the home is used.
Will your property be used solely as a Holiday Home or as a Main Home – (article to follow)?
As a Holiday Home
In the case of holiday use, the main emphasis on controlling the peak use in any 15 minute period, because this is a repetitive monthly cost even when the home is empty.
Using the example used in the previous article of the all year peak 15 minutes being the preparation of an evening meal, there are simple ways in avoiding the highest peak.
Make sure that the water heater is not working, either by simply physically turning it off, or by installing a timer to control the on and off times. Typically the water heater will have a 2kw immersion heater, so by ensuring that it is off when other peak items are in use, will save around 150€ a year in the potencia charge.
With warm air heating it is difficult to alter the controls to reduce the electrical demand, however, with electric radiators or underfloor heating a timer can be set to avoid peaks in demand. Dependent upon the size of the home this can be 2kw upwards. Again, this control has the potential to save a further 150€ a year.
Both of these are easy to achieve and together can save the 300€ a year mentioned in the first article, which can represent 20% of the annual bill.
