MPL: New Year 2025 – Rain in Marbella!

Gecko Towers:

The arrival of the New Year brings renewed optimism, an opportunity to literally clean out and refresh. There’s also always a slight tension as to what the next 12 months holds.

For our part of the Costa del Sol, 2025 started with rain storms on New Year’s Day. It also resulted in the traditional Three Kings processions, that normally take place on the 5th January, being hastily rescheduled. It landed and the quantity of water was substantial, dampening the land but not the spirit of New Year celebrations.

The impact on the water levels at the Embalse de la Concepcion, as it has also been unseasonably warm, have not been unduly dramatic. This morning, 9th January 2025 at 10.00, the totals sat at 66.35% and 38.18 Hm3.

What is astonishing about this figure – and I accept that some desalinated water is already flowing into the reservoir – when compared with the same date in January 2024, the volume sat at a miserable 13.18 Hm3. That’s nearly three times less water in reserve at the same point last year that spawned so many of our community’s issues that we have discussed at length over the last year.

Talking of desalination here is an excellent piece by Chus Heredia from Sur in English that reports that the Desalination Plant in Istan will be up and running and delivering 20m m3 of water per year from March 2025.

If you are considering buying a property in Spain, and keen to protect your investment on a long term basis, you would be well advised to consider those regions where water issues – or the lack thereof – are being addressed and solutions are being pro-actively advanced. From my reading the reservoirs in the regions of Albacete, Alicante, Almeria and Murcia are in particualrly bad shape.
