MPL: Understanding Electricity v6.

Gecko Towers:

This is the sixth in our short series aimed at demystifying that household essential – Electricity.

All the good housekeeping explained earlier may seem rather daunting to us older folk. You may not be surprised however, to hear that there is now “off the shelf” equipment to take over all these repetitive controls. Many of us already have a device called Alexa; for many it just shows simple information, date, time, temperature at nearest meteorological station, setting wake up alarms etc.  Alexa can do so much more. The device is connected to the internet by wifi and when any request is made it uses this connection, making so much more possible.

In the past we were used to fitting time switches to plugs so that we could programme the off and on times of heaters etc., now Alexa simplifies and streamlines these activities. Plugs are available which are controlled by instructions through wifi and surprise (!) Alexa can send all these instructions. I was made aware of this amazing ability in a video call from a grandson. He sat in his studio flat in London and asked Alexa to turn on and off the lights, the television and the heater and then instructed her to turn on the heating at six thirty in the morning. If the family comes to stay, Alexa can make the changes necessary.

A final important point to remember is that your contract with the supply company is for a year and it is important to make a diary note marking the date for the renewal. It may be that a change to an alternative supplier would result in savings, however, unless you make the change the contract is automatically renewed for another year.

These six articles have tried to simplify the issue of your electrical bills and identify actions that can be taken to reduce the overall cost. Where they have failed to help, the author would be happy to clarify.
