MPL: Understanding Electricity v5.

Gecko Towers:

This is the fifth in a short series aimed at demystifying that household essential – Electricity.

As explained in earlier articles, the variable charge each month is the number of Kwhr used during the month. There are a number of good housekeeping habits that can control this.

The famous water heater: In the UK an instant hot water heater is practical because there is no fixed monthly charge. This can be more economical than heating hot water and storing it in a cylinder as even insulated the cylinder is losing heat (energy) twenty-four hours a day. In Spain a 10kw instant hot water heater would be incurring an additional monthlycost of around 40€ for the increased available maxim demand peak, even during unoccupied periods . A storage cylinder is therefore essential in Spain. The saving that can be made is by not overheating the water. It is recommended to maintain the water at above sixty-five degrees Celsius as this temperature kills most bacteria. Keeping the temperature above this simply means losing more energy twenty-four hours a day. If you have sufficient for baths and kitchen at this temperature, a saving can be made.

Avoiding over heating rooms. In the winter you can save energy if you switch off individual electrical heaters. If you reduce the daily use of a 2kw rated electric radiator from 24 hours to 14 hours it can save around 90€ each month.

In the summer, increase the control temperature of the air conditioning when individual rooms are unoccupied for extended periods.

Do not forget that an item like a heated towel rail will cost around 18€ each month if left on all the time This can be saved if it is only switched on ahead of use.
