Gecko Towers:
This is the third in a short series aimed at demystifying that household essential – Electricity.
We are back to look further into the vexing question of what Maximum Demand you should choose.
The Maximum Demand is not measured at a moment in time but is actually calculated from the average energy used over a period. Remember that the unit for measuring the energy used is the kWh, which is the actual flow of energy over a period. Whilst it is termed kWh (i.e. over an hour), the period measured for the calculation of Maximum Demand can be over half an hour or even a quarter of an hour. The calculation below tries to illustrate the point.
An apartment has the main energy users listed below:
• Water heater: 3kW
• Space heating: 4kW
• Air fryer: 3kW
• Four rings on hob: 4kW
• Total: 14kW
Predicting that the peak demand could be during the preparation of an evening meal after the occupants have returned home: The shower has been used and the 3kW-rated water heater is connected. The air conditioning has been switched on, and then the air fryer. Without using the hob, the total is 10kW.
The owner has selected their total as 8kW. The cut-off device has been set at 8kW. In reality, the device does not cut off if the 8kW is exceeded. It most likely looks at how much energy has been used over a fixed period, for example, 30 minutes. The water heater and the space heating have been using energy over the whole period, but the air fryer for only 15 minutes:
• Water heater: 1.5 kWh
• Space heating: 2.0 kWh
• Air fryer: 0.75 kWh
• Total in 30 mins: 4.25 kWh
