MPL: “There’s A Spanish Train…”

Gecko Towers:

Hands up those who remember the excellent Chris De Burgh Album “Spanish Train and Other Stories”? It was released in 1975, jeez that’s 50 years ago….

“There’s a Spanish train that runs between Guadalquivir and old Saville And at dead of night the whistle blows, and people hear she’s running still…” It told a Faustian tale of the Devil and the possession of human souls and was a classic of an era of ProgRock. Here it is: https://youtu.be/wRIr6HVgXp4

Well, this piece has nothing to do with either a train from Seville nor the possession of the soul of a human. It does, however, concern a Spanish train. For years, it’s been the view of residents and tourists alike, that the one thing that the Western Costa del Sol really lacks, is a train service beyond Fuengirola. The prospect of a train service connecting Malaga to Estepona and beyond is fast becoming a reality with the commissioning of a strategic report majoring on the development of the catchily named “C1” railway.

This week, the story was even picked up by The Daily Express, a British newspaper that usually revels in finding unsavory tidbits about the Marbella coast and reporting inconsequential facts as voluminous trends. Please see their piece here

Planning for a train in Marbella hit the buffers when the infamous “Banana Beach” apartment blocks – comprising nearly 300 apartments – was built in the late 1990’s. Intended to be the site of the Marbella train station, the blocks were constructed following some fishy dealings with the Planning Department of the Marbella Town Hall and the then Mayor. Time moves on and those corrupt officials who lined their pockets from such scams are either now in prison or in the grave.

It does however highlight the immense importance of an experienced, local, trustworthy and scrupulously honest Abogado (Spanish Lawyer) in your corner when you are seeking to make a purchase of a property in the Marbella region.
