MPL: Results of the Recent Rain

Gecko Towers:

I am delighted that in addition to my core business at www.MarbellaPropertyLawyers.com over the past year I have been provided with a platform to comment on the state of the water reserves, in particularly, the Marbella region of the Costa del Sol.

Your support, for which I am very grateful, has been enormous. As you’d anticipate, it has driven an interest in the work of my Associates Network and the best of breed solutions that they provide to those who want to buy a property here – for investment, permanent relocation or holidays – and those who dream of living here!

The news of the recent rainstorms in our corner of Andalucia, roughly Malaga to Gibraltar, has been widespread and featured on many international news services in the US, UK and the Middle East. It has prompted calls and messages from friends, relatives and clients from many locations fearing that, following the horrific scenes of deadly flash flooding in Valencia, may be repeated.

Largely the rising water has not resulted in any fatalities, as far as we can determine. This may partly be due to the Red Alert from the Civil Protection authorities sent to our mobile phones on Tuesday (12.11) at 21.30. This prompted action as we braced ourselves for the downpour which occurred on Tuesday overnight into Wednesday (13.11). It was extreme and you may have seen videos of torrential rain gushing down certain city streets, various facilities ant Malaga airport and engorged rivers fast flowing to the sea. Damage to possessions and property will have resulted.

On Wednesday, Malaga city recorded 142mm of rainfall resulting in road closures and the evacuation of nearly 4500 from six local municipalities. Also in Malaga local dams protected the city and the otherwise dry riverbeds that run through the city were awash with fresh water.

Elsewhere 50mm levels of rainfall were recorded – in minutes – in a number of regions and small hailstones hit the streets on Marbella at 04.00. Many businesses including supermarket chains and the local La Canada mall in Marbella closed as a precaution. Most schools also allowed pupils the day at home.

Wednesday also saw an otherwise unique sight of a water spout/tornado off the coast at Marbella’s Cabopino, whipped by storm waters and winds. Impressive thunder and lightning was frequent and quite dramatic.

A friend of mine has a country property North East of Malaga. He lost his concrete driveway, washed down the valley in an otherwise picturesque location. In Fuengirola, where my wife rides horses, the Rio Fuengirola, which is fed by three local mountain ranges, was swollen by water, vegetation and debris but its banks were not breached. I videoed the scene and posted on Facebook receiving over 16,000 views.

As a sensible precaution, the Civil Protection officers of the Mijas’ Local Council decided that horses should be give free accommodation in the old Hippodrome stables which is sited on high ground above Fuengirola. We and many others took a number of horses out of harms way.

So, I can hear you asking, what has the been the impact of all this rain on the stored resources at the local reservoir at Embalse de La Concepcion?

Well, and you’ll appreciate the run-off will take several days to bring the biggest impact, but by 10.00 this morning (15.11) – compared to midnight on 12.11 when the levels sat at 58.50% and 33.66 hm3 – todays totals are 60.39% and 34.75 hm3. This increase of 1.09hm3 equates to just over One Billion litres. Which translates to being sufficient to satisfy the annual consumption of a population of 15,000! And that’s after only 48 hours of run-off and may be combined with a slight risk of rain this Sunday.
