Back in the Day…and by this I mean the early 1960’s, when Marbella tourism was embryonic, there were only five hotels of note along the western Costa del Sol. The iconic Marbella Club, the golfing paradise of Guadalmina Golf Hotel, the now slightly marginalized Cortijo Blanco, the picturesque El Fuerte and, for many, the very best, Hotel Los Monteros.
Over the years the fortunes of these flagships of a quality tourism have varied. Some have rested on their laurels and become a little complacent while others have grasped the opportunities presented by a new wave of wealth to introduce visitors to unparalleled luxury and, even, some eco-conscious “quite tourism”.
It closed for refurbishment at the end of 2022, the Bain Capital owned, Los Monteros Hotel recently re-opened under the US brand “Kimpton”. The hotel, which first opened in 1962, now comprises 195 rooms, sixty of which are suites, many having large terraces with wonderful views of the Mediterranean.
The hotel has been significantly updated but the renovation has preserved its enviable chilled atmosphere and reputation for stunning gastronomy including the Michelin starred “El Chorzo”. Regulars will be relieved to hear that the equally iconic “La Cabane by Dolce & Gabbana” beach club will continue to be the domain of Malaga-born chef Dani García.
The return of an old face is always welcome. The reliability of the familiar brings too many comfort in a World of constant change. Welcome back Los Mos!
