Gecko Towers:
Following a fabulous four day “puente” (bridge) holiday weekend that combined both secular and religious days, when the Western Costa del Sol was blessed with brilliant sunshine and temperatures in the early 20’s (Celsius), the impact of Storm Bert, which has raged in Northern Europe, has been predicted. From tomorrow, 11.12.24, until the weekend temperatures are forecast to drop and rainfall is awaited.
This may be manna for our skiing friends, as Granada’s Sierra Nevada, only a couple of hours from Marbella, has suffered very little snow. For the rest of us it will continue to build resistance into our local reservoirs sufficient to cope with the growing demands of residents and tourists.
Last Thursday, in an exceptional measure the Junta de Andalucia’s Drought Committee sat to consider the boom in water supplied by two recent storms. It was noted that the Western Costa del Sol (broadly the region west from Malaga/Fuengirola to Sotogrande) by January 2025 would have achieved a level of normality in its stocks of water.
A measure, introduced Andalucia-wide, saw an increase in the permitted daily consumption up 25 liters to 225 liters per person. The Committee will reconsider matters in the New Year but it is also noted that the Marbella Desalination Plant at Istán, which is already operating, will be fully operational by July 2025 when it will deliver 20million m3 of water annually to the local supplies.
As at 11.00 this morning (10.12.24), the Embalse de la Concepcion sat at 66.15% with 39.06 Hm3 of water which is over two and a half times the quantity of water recorded at the same date a year ago.
This figure is also significantly increased from my previous post (64.04%-36.85Hm3) on 25.11.14 – see here – MPL: The Rain in Spain…..In the intervening period we have not had any appreciable rainfall, so I must conclude that the over 2% increase in the quantity of water is down to the addition of supplies from the desalination plant proving its essential role in the Western Costa del Sol’s water infrastructure.
