MPL: Costa del Sol – Water Supply.

Gecko Towers

Update 06.08.24 An interesting piece in www.euroweeklynews.com (by Adam Woodward) noted that volume of water at the Concepcion reservoir, in early August, stood at 59.04% of capacity which is up on 2023.

Meanwhile, over at www.surinenglish.com, Chus Heredia, noted that Acosol’s two phases of work to improve the productivity of the desalination plant in Marbella is scheduled to be completed by December. Scaled to produce 20hm3 a year meaning it will produce 650 of the 3500 litres the region – from Torremolinos to Manilva – requires per second in the high season.

Phase One sees capacity increase from an annual 6hm3 to 12hm3. While the completion of Phase Two will push the new annual total to 20hm3. There is already a noticeable difference in the quality of the water and the reduction in residual salt levels.

Update 31.07.24 News has reached us – please see the following Sur in English piece – https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/costa-starts-the-road-its-second-desalination-20240730074854-nt.html – of plans to build a second Desalination Plant between Mijas and Torremolinos on the western Costa del Sol. This will provide essential support to the Marbella plant that is currently undergoing renovation to improve and expand its capacity.

For much of the first quarter of this year, we were under threat from the lack of water. Industries, including farming, seemed threatened and crops were potentially at risk, holidays – particularly those that revolved around a swimming pool – seemed likely to be cancelled and the state of confusion lead people to be fearful about the future prospects of enjoying the quiet life here in the Marbella region.

We were then smiled on by the Weather Gods and it rained solidly ruining many an Easter procession but sustaining the region’s economic model.

MarbellaPropertyLawyers.com (MPL) became a curious cross between a Water Correspondent, watching and reporting the reservoir levels on a daily basis and an Investigative Journalist seeking answers from those in political and commercial positions to affect the water supply.

We were able to report the fabulous news that the Istan-based Desalination plants has received extensive investment and, I am told, that around 50% of all drinking water in the Marbella region now results from desalination and the only percentage grows. Additionally, we were able to bring you details of the decisions of the Junta de Andalucia and the Town Halls, up and down the coast, who had revised their plans and permitted, during the first week of June 2024, the refilling of swimming pools and garden irrigation. The first for almost six months.

Marbella: 01.06.24 – Water Restrictions Relaxed.

Water Crises are not new to the South of Spain and indeed the Desalination plant resulted from initial investment now nearly thirty-five years ago after a pernicious drought.

I was recently recommended to read an excellent review by Chris Chaplow of the very reliable and enjoyable www.andalucia.com. It is simply the most comprehensive, extensive and detailed treatise on the water supply systems and their management in this part of Spain. A long, informative, read so get a cooling drink and digest.
