MarbellaPropertyLawyers: Could the UK rejoin the EU?

Gecko Towers

The new UK Primer Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has been previously characterized as “passionately opposed to Brexit” and he has “argued for a second Referendum.” Could this be excellent news for those keen to live in the Marbella region free of the post Brexit residency issues?

He has repeatedly said that a return by the UK to the European Union is not on the cards but he does have form when it comes to major “U” turns! It is thought that his stance was based in a fear that he’d lose core Labour support if he tinkered with Brexit. However, reports from a leading think-tank, “UK in a Changing Europe”, have suggested that Sir Keir proposed renegotiation of the post-Brexit UK/EU trade relationship, that Boris Johnson so triumphantly claimed as a success, will have vestigial impact on stemming the enormous cost of Brexit to the UK.

Further, the same group has identified that that 78% of Labour voters, 77% of Social Democrats and 73% of the Greens have indicated they would vote to return to the EU! Equally, support for another Referendum of UKs membership of the EU within five years, has been huge.

Oh and the pariah of the Far Right of British politics, the jingoistic former leader of the European Research Group, Jacob Rees-Mogg, has unceremoniously lost his Parliamentary seat. Another hurdle gone….

Life Savers

Political commentators are urging Starmer to quickly sort out a productive relationship with the EU that may or may not involve Freedom of Movement. He has expressed reservations but perhaps needs to take heed of the experience of Germany’s former Chancellor Kohl who, in 1988, doubted that East and West Germany would achieve unification in his lifetime. It actually took only two years!

The new PM has stated a desire to build closer ties with the EU specifically in the areas of research and development, defence and security. He has also appreciated that the students need the opportunity to study abroad, the travel limits on the creative sectors need revision and professional qualifications require mutual recognition. Apparently, much of the work required to address these issues is already underway.

The EU, as reported by Simon Harris, the Irish leader, is willing to offer the UK a new post Brexit deal, an approach welcomed by the new UK administration. However, at this stage, it seems that the constitutional arguments about rejoining, despite the obvious level of support in the country are on back burner.

This is a fascinating political debate and will no doubt be subject to an almost daily evolution. Watch this space!
