Gecko Towers – 5th January 2021
Happy New Year to all our readers.
The start of 2021 seems destined to continue in the seemingly established tradition of 2020. Lockdowns, curfews and vaccines are the order of the day.
In Spain, the smart word is hinting that after the upcoming Three Kings procession (on the 5th January) no doubt a truncated COVID-afflicated affair, certain autonomous regions including Madrid, Valencia, Galicia and Andalusia, that are already dealing with new strains of the virus, will impose a blanket of more extensive but prudent restrictions. Mirroring the decisions of several European governments, including the Italians, Germany and the UK. Any impending lockdown is likely to subsist until mid-February and comes with a host of travel and movement restrictions.
Would it be premature to suggest that the continuation of these restrictions, that sit heavily on the population, as and when the impact of the various vaccines can be demonstrably shown, both in the hospital A&E Departments and statistically, there is likely to be a deluge of those seeking a healthier way of life? I would suggest that the Marbella region will, for many, hold the answer to this demand.
It’s important to look at those economic barometers that suggest that the commercial world’s belief in the continued growth of the Costa del Sol validates the coast as a good investment.
One of the elements that tells a compelling story is the continued investment in the infrastructure of this key and ever popular tourist driven location.
Slated for delivery at the end of 2021 is the future icon of the W Marbella, a luxury hotel with existing siblings in other Spanish locations including Barcelona.

With partners including Marriott International and the Rockwell Group of New York architects, the site chosen for this new flagship is Playa Real de Zaragoza that sits on the eastern flank of Marbella town. The hotel will have 200 rooms including 26 guest suites, a 10,000 sq foot covered terrace, Beach Club and pool decks.
For those for whom the delivery of new build properties is another important measure of the economic viability of a particular region, it has also been announced that adjacent to the new W Marbella will be “The Residences at W Marbella”. A prestigious development of a 100 low-rise condominium apartments and villas. Owners at The Residences will enjoy integrated access to all of the resort’s amenities and services including in-residence dining, and housekeeping.

A slightly more pressing concern for those already living in the Marbella region, is, in addition to the COVID pressures, the Spanish Weather service has issued a severe heavy rain warning from Wednesday 6th until Saturday 8th January 2021. It is suggested that the severe weather may well continue into next week.
