Costa del Sol – The DigiTech Revolution

In the world of Digital Nomads, WFH entrepreneurs and online traders one of the vital pieces of the relocation jigsaw is a strong WiFi connection. For such would be relocaters, without it all the planning that embraces ideas of choosing where you wish to base you and your family and how you wish to live, are meaningless.

At a domestic level of 5G compatibility and Fibre Optic cabling the various supply companies are gradually ensuring that the Costa del Sol is front and centre to meet the demands of the homes and businesses confronted with the myriad of digital opportunities.

A simple Speedtest on my domestic supply shows that the Down and Upload speeds are in the high double figures/low triple figures which enables my family to run all manner of digital based services with huge efficiency. This is in stark contrast to say much of the UK where a maximum of 60 Mbps seems entirely normal.

Vodafone Spain are looking at using new digital technologies to further improve the digital transformation process of the Costa del Sol.

Vodafone, an active participant in the evolving tech market in Malaga, established, in May 2021, their Business European Research and Development Hub. At the time their CEO, Colman Deegan, said “The Vodafone Hub will help Spain and the city of Malaga continue to be a national and international benchmark in attracting and promoting business projects and in the creation of products and services based on innovation and new technologies, [the R&D Hub] will enhance the activity of the city and the digital ecosystem it has developed in recent years.”

More recently it has now been announced that Vodafone Spain has concluded an agreement with the government of the region of Andalucia to promote digital transformation via innovative technology. This will also mean that Vodafone’s Malaga R&D Hub and the Digital Agency of Andalucia will work together on pilot projects. It is understood that these projects will include the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, the Metaverse, Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in sectors including telecare, tourism, industry and emergency assistance.

Vodafone’s Malaga R&D Hub is located in the Andalucia Digital Innovation Hub Technology Park, home to over 600 companies from 30 different countries. It is anticipated that the tech giant will employ over a thousand when fully operational which is a massive boost to the Malaga economy.

These are very exciting times in the Malaga Tech world and one cannot fail to be engaged by the quality of businesses choosing to make Malaga part of their international network.

STOP PRESS Another global tech giant, Microsoft, has concluded a collaboration protocol, signed 5th October 2022, with the Junta de Andalucia to advance innovation, digital development and the improvement of employability in Andalucia. This move is intended to advance the Junta’s digital strategy for the region.

The ambitions of the Junta from this new move are broadly to enhance digitization and consequential employment, to welcome digital talent to the region improving the economy and employment opportunities and to provide the entire population with an education and training platform.

These aims sit hand in glove with the entrepreneurial drive of the Federal and Regional governments who are working to embrace the new economies. With the local authorities including the office of the Mayor in Malaga, particularly, providing enthusiastic encouragement and support for tech businesses, wherever they are from, to flourish in this beautiful part of the world.
