A tram line from Malaga to Marbella

When you have been based on the Costa del Sol for as long as I have, I reckon every couple of years there is a new and ground-breaking project to improve infrastructure and various communication links. It may be as simple as a substantial resurfacing of older roads or putting electric buses on local routes.

Last week, the Olive Press newspaper reported, that a group of engineers had presented a plan to run a looping tram line from Malaga, inland to Churriana, to Alhaurin El Grande, to Ojen, finally dropping down to Marbella and San Pedro de Alcantara. A complete journey time of around forty minutes. The plan also embraced a continuation of the line to Estepona, onwards to Sotogrande and Algeciras.

As many will know, the regular railway train (in our photo) is available from Malaga’s Costa del Sol airports and winds slowly from the airport as far as Fuengirola – which is perfect for those staying there, less so for those traveling further towards Marbella.

In Marbella, for example, controversy has dogged plans for an extension to the current airport rail service. The Banana Beach development was permitted and built – and subsequently legalized – on the beachside site previously earmarked for Marbella’s train terminus.

The project which, let’s face it, would be a God-send to those who don’t want to incur the costs of a taxi from the airport or rely on the somewhat sporadic bus service.

It is projected to take up to ten years to complete with a projected cost of €2.6bn. I suspect certain European grant funds would be available for a substantial portion of the budget.

We will follow this with interest over the months and report back on progress.
