The Axarquia region is very picturesque and rural setting to the North and East of Malaga. It sits at the foot of the mountain range that becomes the Sierra Nevada behind Granada and is a favourite for those seeking a more bohemian lifestyle away from the more conventional charms of the Costa del Sol. It is bordered by the town of Nerja in the Far East of the province. Historically it had abundant lakes which made for an interesting diversion away from the coast for those roasting in the summer’s heat. In recent years it has been plagued by a severe drought.

A really important takeaway from this is that Axaragua (the local public water company) and local farmers have agreed that 50% of the new plants supply will be for agricultural needs of crop irrigation etc with the remaining 50% being for domestic needs. Thus the projected 24 hm3 will be shared between the needs of the local agricultural economy and households.
