Post-Brexit Spanish solution for on-line Brits.

Gecko Towers

The thorn of Brexit still proves painful for many Brits who would love to enjoy a better quality of life on Spain’s Costa del Sol. Spain continues to be a massive draw for digital nomads looking to work abroad. There’s just something about the Mediterranean lifestyle, weather and Spanish culture that draws so many to the area.

Do you imagine yourself soaking up the sun or going for a swim after work? How about spending weekends sipping Cava under a palm tree?

It could be easier to work and live in Spain than you think – if you can work remotely via the internet.

The solution, subject to a number of criteria that you’ll need to satisfy, is a digital nomad visa. This is a temporary permit for professionals who work remotely via the internet and for a foreign company, whilst living in various locations around the world.

The Spanish Digital Nomad Visa has minimum eligibility criteria.

Here’s a breakdown of the minimum eligibility criteria for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa as of mid 2025:

Application Logistics & Duration

• Stay Duration:

• Applied from abroad: initial visa up to 12 months; renewable later.

• Applied within Spain: initial permit up to 3 years, renewable and leading to long-term residency.

• Family Inclusion: Visa includes spouse/unmarried partner and dependent children.

• Residency Requirement for Renewal: Must spend at least 183 days per year in Spain.

Income & Employment Requirements

• You must demonstrate earning at least 200% of Spain’s minimum wage. As of 2025, this usually translates to around €2,520–2,763 per month (approx. €30,240–33,156 annually).

• Employment must be remote and primarily for non‑Spanish clients:

• Employees: must have worked remotely for a foreign employer for at least 3 months.

• Freelancers: no more than 20% of income can come from Spanish sources.

Qualifications & Background

• Education: University degree, or at least 3 years of professional experience.

• Must be 18 years or older, with a clean criminal record (often a certificate issued within the last 3 months, apostilled/legalized). No Schengen refusals.

Health Insurance & Registration

• Mandatory private health insurance covering all medical services without co‑payments, valid from Day 1 and issued by a company operating in Spain.

• An NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is also essential for property purchase, legal and financial interactions.

Visa Duration & Tax Regime

• Issued initially for 1 year, renewable—total stay up to 5 years.

• Special tax regime: flat 24% tax on income (up to €600,000), instead of Spain’s progressive rates.

Family Reunification

• The visa can include dependents—spouses/partners and children—with income thresholds adjusted for each (e.g., +75% of SMI for spouse, +25% per child).

Is Buying Property Allowed?

Yes—holders of the Digital Nomad Visa are free to buy property in Spain, including Marbella, with no specific restrictions tied to the visa. Ownership does not grant residency, but the visa does permit residence and legal property purchase.
