Gecko Towers:
After a beautiful Easter Week, never failing to be deeply moved by the spectacle of penitents shouldering hefty silver thrones bearing the Virgin or Christ on the Cross, we returned to work with the news that as a result the recent rainfall Marbella’s drought is officially pronounced over!
The announcement was greeted with muted celebrations as it coincided with the death of Pope Francis, a very savvy and progressive spiritual leader with a focus on the difficulty’s regions face in an increasingly secular culture.

Water restrictions across the province of Málaga will be gradually relaxed, hopefully returning to normal conditions, after years of severe drought.
The March – officially the third wettest month on record – rainfall filled the provinces reservoirs allowing residents, including members of the farming community, to believe that the drought could soon be over province-wide.
Personal water consumption rules have been relaxed. Now, in Malaga province, on a daily basis 250 litres of water per person may be consumed. Málaga city and the Axarquía, the saw their limit increase to 225 litres per person. Rural areas also benefitted from substantial increases to irrigate crops.
With the Andalucian reservoir levels sitting at 51.86% of total capacity – even after many having had to open their slice gates – representing over 128% of last year’s. This should prompt further easing of restrictions.
The Costa del Sol is in a certified ‘normal’ state according to drought levels. Our local La Concepción reservoir sat at 96% of its capacity, with more than 55 million cubic metres of water. In addition, the demands of summertime’s tourism will be met in part by the soon to be complete Marbella seawater desalination plant. It will supply 20 million cubic metres per year where typically demand sits at around 90 million cubic metres per year.
Put simply, the long-endured Costa del Sol drought has come to an end with reservoir capacities now materially above emergency threshold levels resulting in water restrictions being lifted.
