Gecko Towers:
Update – 07.02.24 – We have today received the following from the Colegio de Administradores de Fincas de Málaga y Melilla – the Organisation that represents the Administrators of Communities of Owners.
“We inform you that, according to the latest update on the drought situation by the Junta de Andalucía, the Western Costa del Sol has moved from a state of severe scarcity to moderate scarcity, placing it in a pre-alert situation and allowing an increase in the water allocation to 225 liters per inhabitant per day.
This means, as reported by Acosol, that the water use restrictions previously in place have been lifted, allowing irrigation and the filling and refilling of swimming pools without limitations. However, water should always be used responsibly.
According to the Order of January 21, 2025, published in the BOJA, the municipalities affected by this improvement are: Torremolinos, Mijas, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona, Manilva, Ojén, Istán, Benahavís, and Casares.
Acosol, the public company responsible for the water supply in the area, has also stated that consumption monitoring and control will continue to ensure compliance with the established limit of 225 liters per day.
Therefore, the College of Property Administrators of Málaga and Melilla urges responsible water use, reminding that if these authorized limits are exceeded, new restrictions may be implemented.”
This provides a very important update to the following post.
I am not ashamed to admit that I have used the spectacular Sur in English photo (published with the following excellent Chus Heredia article), as our featured image, in celebration of just how far the Marbella – the Western stretch of the Costa del Sol – has come in the last few months to address the compelling question – Is the Drought Over in Marbella?
While those who only temporarily stay on the Costa del Sol may have missed the recent downpours, us residents have done, in your place, the dodging between rain showers, the avoiding being struck by lightening and the repeated emptying of overflowing pools, trust me its been Biblical!
The impact of the most recent showers, in early February, has definitely moved the needle. However, the official reporters are not yet quite able to record that the situation has reached a comprehensive “Normality”. This may be a sensible precaution, given the overall limited amount of capacity, and the dynamics are somewhat complicated, but the following piece makes clear the reservations coupled with a degree of optimism.
Chus’ Sur In English piece is here https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/the-costa-sol-moves-the-mildest-level-20250204073737-nt.html
At a micro level the depths recorded at the Embalse de la Concepcion over the last few days illustrate just how impactful these showers have been and how they contribute to an argument that the need for ongoing restrictions need to be considered very carefully.
On Monday 03.02.25 – the level sat at 66.70% or 38.38 Hm3. By Tuesday (04.02) this had risen to 67.12% or 38.62Hm3. However by today, Wednesday 05.02 this had topped 67.40% or 38.78 Hm3.
Or, in simple terms the Reservoir has received 0.4Hm3 or 400m litres of water in just three days. When combined with the run off from the snow that has stayed on the aptly named “Sierra de la Nieves”, a February phenomena, this bodes very well for the local water officials to reconsider their position over the coming months.

Interestingly, this compares to a grand total of 13.07Hm3 for the same week in 2024. This equates to a quantity that is around a third of today’s figures. No that has to be real progress!
