MPL: Understanding Electricity v4.

Gecko Towers:

This is the forth in a short series aimed at demystifying that household essential – Electricity.

In the previous article, we looked the calculation of Maximum power using at a specific example; however, each user has a different pattern of home life. The question that arises is how much are you prepared to adapt your life to reduce your energy bills? The answer in many cases is that we cannot forecast the use over a full year period. For older people, there is a dramatic change between when we are living alone and when we have family visiting. It is, unfortunately, the fact that the contract with the supply company is for a year, and you are not able to change the peak demand for a single month. If you set the contracted connected peak on your use alone, then the cut-off device will be overly busy when you have visitors! The reverse is true that with a demand set for the highest week, then for the other months of the year, you are paying more than necessary.

As an example, if you think you need a 10kW supply for one month but only 5kW for the rest of the year, you will be charged for 11 months at around €20 per month for the unused capacity. Once the decision is made for the higher capacity, then in most cases, there will be no need to spread the load over the twenty-four hours of the day.

In those situations where there is a need to minimise the peak capacity, there are a number of simple adjustments that can be made:

• Generally, a timer can be fitted to the water heater to avoid coincidental use with other large demands.

• If you cook with electricity, avoid running the washing machine and tumble dryer whilst cooking.

These are ways to reduce contracted capacity, and in a later article, we will look at ways of reducing the actual consumption of electricity.
