MPL: Recent Rains Positive Impact on Agriculture

Gecko Towers:

There is often a suggestion that, those of us involved in the international property market, our sole focus is on persuading those from other parts of the World to consider a property purchase on the Costa del Sol.

I make no apologies for the fact that my family and I happily settled here in the Marbella region more than two decades ago and the local property market has, to some great extent, been a key driver to our successful relocation. I am happy to admit that I am an evangelist for those considering doing the same.

However, I am not a blinkered Expat thriving on Marmite (btw I do love Marmite) and Corrie. There is a much bigger Andalucia that us foreigners. There are picturesque rural communities which have a feel of time standing still but they are not merely the subject of postcards. There are many who make their living cultivating olives, honey and chestnuts. They feed their families from the proceeds of their enterprises raising livestock, planting and harvesting crops. More than anything, they too demand water to hydrate and irrigate, so the recent rain storms have added to their stocks.

Here is an excellent Sur in English piece that acknowledges that the recent rainfall has allowed the local farming community some respite. This is worth celebrating as the farmers are an integral part of the Andalucian cultural jig-saw. https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/the-countryside-smiling-because-the-accumulated-rainfall-20241120081322-nt.html

I thought you may like to know that as a result of the recent rainfall, following my earlier update, MPL: Rain First Thing, Now Bright Sunshine!, when the level of the Embalse de la Concepcion sat at 62.34% and 35.87 Hm3, as at today at 10.00 the new totals sat at 63.31% and 36.43Hm3. That’s further increase of nearly 1% and 0.56Hm3 – that’s over 0.5m litres of water. This is a staggering continued gain given the ongoing local consumption.

I have been asked by many people about the current Drought Restrictions and have conducted certain investigations to see where we are at. Here is an excellent post from our friends at www.Andalucia.com which brings us as up to date as I could find on the actions Andalucia’s government. https://andalucia.com/living/water-restrictions-on-costa-del-sol

It is clear that the more recent rains have not resulted in a yet categoric statement from the Junta de Andalucia, but I anticipate that as we approach the end of the year they will feel compelled to issue a further bulletin that acknowledges the substantial rainfall and allows us all some breathing space from the worst impact of the La Sequia (the drought)
