MPL: More Rain To Fall in Marbella

Gecko Towers:

Stop Press at 21.30 on 12.11.24 – the Spanish meteorological agency, AEMET, raised the threat level to the local population and their possessions to a Red Alert. We have received texted alerts on our mobile phones from the Civil Protection authorities. Bracing ourselves for violent storms.

At the weekend I went to see the Embalse de la Concepcion (reservoir) in the Istan region of Marbella – a little inland from the coast. I have been reporting for a couple of weeks on the incredible run off of rainwater into the Reservoir delivered by the DANA (a Spanish acronym for high-altitude isolated depression), that wreaked havoc in the Valencia region and Cartama, an area to the immediate West of Malaga. It didn’t look full but certainly better stocked – see my featured image.

Put simply the depth of – as at 09.00 this morning now sits at nearly 59% of full capacity – readers will recall, post-Easter and pre-Summer, the stock of water sat at around 74%. Today’s is over double of that experienced at the same date last year.

Against this background a friend in Marbella, Jose Louis Hernandez, reported yesterday that AEMET – the Spanish meteorological agency – has issued an Orange Warning for the western Costa del Sol – basically Malaga to Sotogrande. It envisages that, tomorrow 13th November – we will see rain from 03.00 to midday, that will deliver around 30 litres per M2 per hour or 105 litres over a twelve hour period. More is scheduled for Thursday 14th – from midnight to midday – but slightly less intense with 20 litres per M2 and up to 60 litres in an hour.

Umbrellas up!

Naturally, I will keep you updated on progress but if the last DANA delivered rains are anything to go by we may well see Reservoir levels return to the post-Easter highs. This may well become irrefutable evidence that the immediate region’s drought status requires revision.
