Gecko Towers:
As promised, I am scouring the media for various recent posts regarding the water situation and particularly the treatment of pools and irrigation.
Yesterday (15.05.24) the Euro-Weekly News carried a piece by Kevin Fraser Park that reported from June 1st, the filling of private swimming pools on the Costa del Sol will be permitted. It seems this comes from a decision of Andalucia Government’s (Junta de Andalucia) Drought Commission meeting on 15.05.
I read the word “filling” to include refilling due to evaporation not refilling from empty – but I may not be correct in this. I know it’s important to many whose urbanizations emptied their pool for conservation or renovation during the winter months
Kevin reported that Secretary General for Water, Ramiro Angulo, said that, “it is compulsory for private swimming pools to have a water recirculation system that allows them to use the minimum amount of water necessary to guarantee the sanitary quality of the water and to replace any losses that may occur due to evaporation or filter cleaning”.
The meeting, also confirmed that with effect from June 1st there would be an increase in the permitted water consumption up to 225 litres per inhabitant per day, from to the current 200 litres.
On the question of garden irrigation the meeting is reported as permitting “when there are species of special botanical interest and there is no recycled water available”, from 1st June, the allocation allowed will rise from 200 cubic metres to 400 cubic metres per hectare per month to cover survival irrigation and equates to approximately one irrigation per week.
Additionally, and in line with what we had previous understood, Town Halls, “can now request exceptions to the drought decree and if they comply with the established requirements, they will be authorised”, said Ramiro Angulo.
We had envisaged that the Town Halls would be introducing the above rules for their own municipalities after applying to the Junta. However, it appears that the Junta has now set the general tone for, at least, the Western Costa del Sol. We will wait and see if there are further announcements from individual Town Halls.
